Folders, boxes, rolls of film, ceramic eggs and much more are scattered across the plains, seemingly on every corner. It looks like Captain America might have a kleptomaniac vein, as I’ve never seen so many collectibles in a video game. There’s a slight sense of Prince of Persia for these segments and they’ll no doubt seem completely useless to some people, but I found them quite funny. Jumping from a pole to a pole in a very gymnastic way is nothing more than a push of a button, but time to pass your jumps properly and you will be rewarded with more fluid movement and earn bonus credits on upgrades. The simple platform sequences are less impressive but surprisingly fun. Agile use of evasive maneuvers and defense is the order of the day until you have enough juice to unleash a devastating super strike. Instead of giving everyone a weakness, they are usually asked to use their skills to action them, which is quite refreshing. Mixing your many strike options against large groups is where the game is best, with slow-motion finishing moves that highlight the strength of Caps in an extremely satisfying way.īoss action are thick and fast, but not to the point that they feel forced. Counterstrike and other more advanced special moves can be unlocked if you earn credits, so the game’s action evolves over the course of the adventure just enough to keep things interesting.Įnemy diversity is also well managed, with new enemy types appearing regularly, each requiring a slightly different approach to defeat them. Projectile strike can be blocked and directed at enemies If they have the right Timing, which not only takes away the pesky soldier, but also helps recharge their super-strike energy. In addition, there is a Grab button, the ability to throw your shield at enemies or objects in the vicinity, and a modifier that allows you to perform special strike as long as you have enough juice in the Supermeter.ĭefensive play is just as important as strike, with Cap shield able to withstand severe firepower. If you outrageously take your clues from Batman’s successful exit, you get a single button to deal punches and kicks, all chained together in a way far more spectacular than any right. The opening sequence in which Captain America appears in some trenches to confront the evil army Of Hydra is not great, but soon you enter a pseudo-open world interconnected by a sewage system, and the quality of the game increases a few good levels.Īction is the key to the success of the game as a fun superhero title. While the world that created Next Level Games has a nice solidity, there is no denying that some areas are very boring, the frame rate is almost always lower than the Level, and the lighting sometimes seems to have been raised by a previous generation. Creating a parallel story to the Film undoubtedly gave the development team more room for creativity.
Movie villain Red Skull makes an appearance, but his main enemy is scientist Armin Zola, who is trying to recreate the serum that gave Rogers his powers. While you get many of the same characters, including Chris Evans as Steve ‘ Cap ‘ Rogers, the game takes place on a castle plot in the Bavarian mountains.
Perhaps one of the reasons why Captain America has become so good is that The story here is not so closely related to the Film.
What I got was an action title inspired by Next Level Games ‘ Batman: Arkham Asylum, which, while a bit rough around the edges and clearly requires a dose of super-soldier serum, is a funny comic-Romp with satisfying carnal action. It’s fair enough to say that SEGA doesn’t have a good track record when it comes to its Marvel titles(Thor anyone ?), so I went there and expected the worst. Captain America: Super Solider could be the best surprise of 2011.
